57 orphaned children rescued from covered van in Mexico

Mexican federal agents intercepted the covered van at a border checkpoint in the country's northern province of Chihuahua, Mexico's National Institute of Migration (INM) said. 67 migrants including 57 children were rescued from the van. Most of the children are without guardians.

INM said the covered van was coming from Guatemala. The age of 57 children in it is between 14 and 17 years. Most of them are boys. There are also few female children. Several mothers and their daughters were also rescued from the van. None of them had valid documents to enter Mexico, INM said.

The covered van driver has been handed over to the law enforcement agencies. Apart from this, unaccompanied children will be kept in the custody of the central government of the country until their parents are found.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of immigrants gathered at the Mexican border to enter the United States in hopes of a better life. Most of them are citizens of various South American countries including Venezuela. They are passing extremely inhuman days due to lack of food and shelter. They have been waiting for months by pitching tents in the border area. The refugees are spending their days in fear of being evicted at any moment.
